Shared by Tanzania (where is called Lake Nyasa), Mozambique (Lake Niassa) and Malawi, the main partner, Lake Malawi is the southernmost of the great African lakes, formed by the Great Rift Valley depression. Although it is the ninth largest lake of the world in extension, it is the fourth in water volume and the lake that has more fish species. A true freshwater sanctuary, considered one of the best diving spots in the world - out of the sea.
The lake is also very popular for sport fishing, canoeing, sailing and water skiing. The islets along the lake are true natural havens, where time and space take on another dimension. The largest of them, Likoma and Chizumulu, are in Mozambican territorial waters, but belong to Malawi. In the southern portion, Lake Malawi National Park protects the most scenic area of the lake, where the most exclusive lodges are found.
