REUNION, THE INTENSE ISLAND

 

Reunion, a volcanic island, lies 800 km east of Madagascar and 220 km southwest of Mauritius. When Piton de la Fournaise volcano erupted in 1986, the island gained a few square meters. In September 1992, the volcano exploded again, but the lava river stopped before reaching the coast. The Piton climb, last time erupted in 2015, is the main attraction of the French island. With an approximate circumference of 207 km, it is slightly larger than Mauritius, but with half the population.

 

Jutting out of the Indian Ocean like a basaltic shield wrapped in a blanket of vegetation, Reunion is an almost surreal succession of magical landscapes, with surprising diversity.
