RWANDA, THE LAND OF A THOUSAND HILLS
Some stories are improbable, almost impossible. In 1994, Rwanda collapsed in civil war after president's death in an attack - the plane he was traveling on was hit by a missile when it landed in Kigali. Months of cruel bloodshed started. It is estimated that one million people were killed in a period of 90 days. Millions of Rwandans have fled to neighboring Uganda and Tanzania to escape the violence, murder and looting that has plagued their country. The term genocide is bland for what happened.
Surprisingly and in short time, Rwanda has transformed itself into a respectable, balanced and progressive nation. The struggle to reduce poverty and structural problems in the African reality continues, but in a context of peace, dignity and order. Knowing and understanding the recent history of Rwanda, even if it is not an easy one, is possibly the most remarkable experience in a country full of very striking attractions - now positioned as an upmarket and sustainable tourism destination.
Volcanoes National Park is one of four parks on the planet that protect endangered mountain gorillas. It is also the base for climbing several different volcanoes - a true paradise for climbers. Nyungwe NP is the habitat for chimpanzees and other rare primates. Akagera NP a successful case of wildlife reintroduction: it has become again a prime safari park. Kigali is where the thousand hills begin and end - in harmony with all the poetry that exists in Rwanda.
