The Volcanoes National Park (in French: Parc National Des Volcans) is located in northwestern Rwanda and bordered by Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The three parks are a sanctuary for the endangered mountain gorilla and golden monkeys. Both can be seen on a guided and heavily controlled trail, which requires special permission.
The park owes its name to the chain of volcanoes that make up the Virunga massif. Five of Virunga's eight volcanoes are in the park, and all can be climbed: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo (this one, just from Uganda side). In the 1990s, the region also became a battleground in Rwanda's civil war, paralyzing the park's activities until 1999. When peace returned to the country, the park became a world reference in conservation and a prime international attraction.
