About 100 km south of the border between South Africa and Mozambique lies Sodwana Bay, affectionately known as "Sordies". The heavily protected marine and coastal reserve is a paradise for nature lovers, both outside and inside the water.
In addition to the impressive tiger shark, there are several rare species such as the coelacanth, which scientists believed to be extinct, but it was discovered in this region in 1938. It is nicknamed "living fossil" because scientists were only aware of fossils, long before they could celebrate the unusual discovery of a living specimen.
In the summer months, water oscillates around a comfortable 25°C and you can witness the turtles laying eggs on the park's beaches. In addition to being considered the best diving spot in South Africa, Sodwana Bay has easy access to the beautiful iSimangaliso and Hluhluwe-Imfolozi parks, as well as to the village of St. Lucia.
