In the 1980's, investments by the Egyptian government and foreign groups transformed the former fishing village of Hurghada into nearly 40 km of a dense strip of resorts on the Red Sea coast. Very popular with European, Russian and Egyptian tourists, the region has lost some of its glamor due to terrorist attacks and unbridled growth.
The favorable climate throughout the year in the region, the possibilities of excellent diving, nautical and wind sports, such as kitesurfing and windsurfing, the bustling nightlife and the historic center, El Dahar, remain the main factors of attraction and interest. If the idea of visiting Hurghada as a single destination is quite questionable, it is still a convenient extension for beach, diving and sports after a trip in the Nile Valley region.
