Stone Town is the main city of Zanzibar, a touristic, historical and artistic highlight in East Africa. The architecture reflects diverse influences underlying Swahili culture, with a unique blend of Moorish, Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements. For this reason, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Although most visitors go directly to the beautiful beaches of the island, it is a main cultural attraction and should not be underestimated.
In Stone Town you can wander for hours in a maze of narrow streets and get lost in centuries of history. Each corner brings something new - an old palace, a Persian bathroom, a ruin, a coral stone mansion with carved doors and balconies, or a school full of children singing verses from the Koran.
