Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwest Uganda, on the banks of the Rift Valley. The mist-covered mountain slopes are protected by one of the oldest and most biologically diverse tropical forests in Uganda, dating back more than 25,000 years and comprising more than 400 species of plants.
Most notably, the "impenetrable forest" also protects a consistent population of mountain gorillas, which can be tracked by visitors on the famous guided tour. For many, it is the country's main attraction and requires a special permit that must be purchased well in advance. Bwindi is the natural habitat for more than half of the world's mountain gorilla population (the other half is located in the Virunga Mountains, spread over three parks).
