The oldest South African park, proclaimed in 1895, is located in the heart of Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal province and close to the village of St Lucia. Big 5 territory, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi became known worldwide in the 1960's, due to Operation Rhino: the largest white rhino relocation and restocking operation ever carried out on the planet, with enormous success and positive effects for the rhino population as well as for the region's ecosystem.
Presenting the largest population of white rhinos in the world, the park continues to be targeted by poachers and illegal horn dealers: hundreds of rhinos have been killed inside the park in recent years. Visiting the beautiful park, walking its famous wild trails, knowing and spreading the challenges for the conservation of rhinos is one of the greatest weapons in the fight against illegal trafficking.
