Although the main roads from Cape Agulhas (southernmost point of Africa) to Alexandria (northern Egypt) today are better than one can imagine and allow to cross the entire African continent in much safer conditions than in the recent past, self-drive is only possible in few destinations. Besides South Africa, where we strongly recommend car hire for those who fit the profile, we only advise regular self-drive options in three other countries: Namibia, which has great roads, but only recommended for experienced drivers; Tanzania on our special Land Rover 4x4 expedition itineraries; and Reunion, an island destination that is suitable to self-drive exploration. Mauritius and Seychelles have no auto rental complications, but only advisable to those who really wish to explore the islands. For an adventure profile, it is possible to rent equipped 4x4 vehicles in Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Madagascar.
